Why is it important to get your kidneys tested if you have diabetes?

If you have diabetes, your kidneys can get damaged without you knowing it. Regular tests help catch problems early, before they get serious. Early treatment can protect your kidneys and keep you healthier.

How should doctors help protect your kidneys if you have diabetes?

Your doctor should examine your kidneys to help keep them healthy when you have diabetes. They can use your urine and blood samples to see how well your kidneys are working.

Talk with your doctor and health plan to find out about what other services are available. Many health plans offer additional support and resources for patients with diabetes. These additional services may be educational materials (online and in print), classes or support groups, or phone counseling.

What do the stars mean?

The scores show how well each medical group did at making sure patients ages 18-75 with type 1 or type 2 diabetes had a kidney health exam. This includes an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and a urine albumin-creatinine ratio (uACR) test. The higher score means more patients got the right care at the right time.

The scores are based on information from at least 30 medical group patient records in 2024.
