Why is it important to screen for Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. If found early, Chlamydia can easily be treated and cured without complications. If left untreated, Chlamydia can cause serious infertility problems, which means that you may not be able to get pregnant.

How should doctors screen for Chlamydia?

Your doctor will do a lab test for Chlamydia as part of a pelvic exam. If you are a sexually active person between the ages of 16 and 24, it is important for your doctor test you for the disease every year. Your doctor may also recommend that your sexual partner(s) be screened and treated if necessary.

Talk with your doctor and health plan to find out about what materials and other resources are available. Many health plans offer educational materials (print or online) about screening for Chlamydia and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These materials can help you to better understand the tests, the results and how to prevent STIs.

What do the stars mean?

The scores show how well each medical group did at making sure sexually active people, aged 16 through 24, were tested for Chlamydia. The higher score means more people got the right care at the right time.

The scores are based on information from at least 30 medical group patient records in 2024.
