Concurrent use of Opioids and Benzodiazepines
2023-24 Edition
Why is it important to monitor concurrent use of opioids and benzodiazepines?
Drug overdose deaths have increased over the years and through scientific research have been linked to high-risk
prescribing practices. Overlapping opioid and benzodiazepine prescriptions is one such combination that can lead to
increased risk of respiratory depression, which can be fatal. Despite these risks, the overlapping of these two drug
prescriptions is relatively common.
How do doctors monitor appropriate use of opioids and benzodiazepines?
By tracking the concurrent use of these two types of drugs, providers can prevent opioid overdose deaths. Providers can
avoid prescribing opioids when there is an unfavorable balance of benefit and harm for most patient populations.
What do the stars mean?
This measure shows the percentage of patients 18 years and older that are prescribed opioids and benzodiazepines at the
same time. Lower scores are better. The scores are based on information from at least 30 medical group patient records in 2022.
